Dave's Bio- Vox, Guitars

Dave Devlin has been making a name for himself over the last ten years in the challenging and thriving Philadelphia music scene. From thousands of new fans to a successful freshman CD release on DTC Records, national success is knocking on his door and deservingly so. He is the ultimate double threat whether it is fronting his energy driven rock band or playing solo at the packed houses of popular acoustic lounges. Dave can change the energy of the room effortlessly, which makes his live performances unforgettable. Days after a show, an attendee will most likely find themselves humming his driving rhythms and stacked harmonies, or singing a hook from one of his many compositions.

With Philadelphia’s present void of a nationally recognized singer songwriter all eyes lie upon Dave Devlin. His creative energy moves him to fill this void, as native Philadelphia audibles, The Roots and Jill Scott, were once moved to do in their respective genres of Rap and R&B. Slowly, but surely, Dave is filling the songwriter’s void and becoming Philly’s new hometown hero.

Dave’s story is a basic one. His continued success has come from a grass roots and guerilla marketing strategy. It is his belief that his audience both fuels and centers his musical career. He does so by handing his fans a big heart and a genuine appreciation of their support. This humble approach has led to 9,000 units sold of his debut CD and an increased global fan base.

Simply put, Dave’s signature sound is organic and raw. It can be compared to that of an early REM and, most recently, to that of a robust John Mayer. His song palette ranges from Top 40 Pop to College Alternative yet finds a way to defy such labels. Like the Beatles, Dave likes to mix styles and tempos to instigate a novel breed of sounds, which he has demonstrated on his freshman release and his sophomore release, Spark, due out in April 2005 on his own label, Radioball Records.

GUT REACTION: Good tunes, well performed and produced. Intelligent lyrics. Various styles, but overall reminds me of Matthew Sweet"
INFLUENCES: Matthew Sweet, Goo Goo Dolls, Paul Westerburg, Wilco, etc.
OVERALL: 4/5
HIGH: Clean, Crisp, tunes. Great lyrics that many could identify with. Well worth listening too
LOW: None
MUSICALITY: Very Good. The overall feel is one of modern/pop rock- but definately not that generic
LYRICALITY: Again, the words are wonderful
FAVORITE TRACK: #4 Open Minded
REVIEW: "This release has timeless listen-ability. I got great enjoyment out of the Dave Devlin experience. The release shows depth, talent, and thoughtful melodies. As well as a bit of range in style across the tracks, while keeping within what I would call a more 'progressive' style of rock. I'm already interested in what may be on the next Dave Devlin has to offer."
WOULD I BUY THIS? Yes, one for the collection

"Sometimes loud, sometimes soft, yet always powerful, Dave Devlin is the consummate musical artist. In a world where so many musicians, although quite talented, are still searching for their "voice", Devlin has achieved just that. With a unique ability to create a dialogue from within a song, Devlin draws one's ear closer to listen and participate. Hence, one's attention is arrested and induced into the very center of melody, lyric and instrumentation."

Since I know people, I must say that I got a preview of the CD before its release and it's well worth your hard earned cash. Mr. Devlin rides the wave of the new musical sensibility, which is cresting on our horizon. People are beginning to wake up and realize that, yes, Britney Spears does suck. Mr. Devlin, on the other hand, is a talented songwriter and a chameleon of rhythmic pacings, flowing effortlessly on his debut album from soulful ballads and crunching rockers. If I could compare him to a present artist, it would probably be a John Mayer or a more manly Duncan Sheik! But surely, Mr. Devlin seeks not to be known as a more manly Duncan Sheik, but simply as Dave Devlin, a man of considerable musical talent and ability. Buy the CD and find out for yourself!

Dave Devlin's self titled debut cd rocked from start to finish. Period. A great example of modern pop rock, it is a varied mix of acoustic and electric rhythms, with strong vocals and emotional lyrics. Each song varies in speed and intensity, but still holds true to its sound, and Mr. Devlin presents all of them with a voice that doesn't easily fade into the background.
The disc easily stands up against any major label release, with great photography, a minimalistic approach to design, and without going overboard on production. Not everyone will see it the same way, but I can pick out emo, folk, and even a little jazz influence sprinkled into Dave Devlin's rock package.

You can pick up the disc from DTC Records' online store for $14.95 or from CD Baby or Amazon. Either way, I would recommend checking out his mp3's. Make sure to check out a few before you make a judgement, because they really do vary.

"Dave Devlin is one of the few honest musicians I've met. He has come through for me in a pinch, was always available and prompt. Dave's music reflects that same attention to detail and level of care. He really cares about what he's doing, something that can be considered a rarity in the music business. I never get tired of hearing his acoustic sets and I'm even more excited to hear his full band play the pieces he writes. He is what the industry should be. Maybe I should change my company name to Pro-Devlin?...I count him as one of the most reliable friends I have."
